Barack Obama<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em> 20 July 2013 Last updated at 01:43 GMT<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>President Barack Obama has said that \"<span style=\"background-color: #ccffff;\">Trayvon Martin <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">could have been<\/span> me, 35 years ago<sup>1<\/sup><\/span>\", in his first comments on the case since last week's <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">verdict<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The unarmed black 17-year-old was shot and killed in Florida in February 2012.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>George Zimmerman, 29, said he opened fire on the teenager in self-defence and was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">acquitted<\/span> of murder by a Florida court last week.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In an unexpected press call, <span style=\"background-color: #ccffff;\">Mr Obama said <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">very few<\/span> black men in the US had <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">not<\/span> experienced <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">racial profiling<\/span><sup>2<\/sup><\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"background-color: #ccffff;\">Mr Obama said the pain <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">that<sup>3<\/sup><\/span> African-Americans felt around the case came from the fact <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">that<sup>3<\/sup><\/span> they viewed it through \"a set of experiences and a history <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">that<sup>3<\/sup><\/span> doesn't go away\"<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He said African Americans were also keenly aware of racial <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">disparities<\/span> in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">application<\/span> of criminal laws.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\"That all <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">contributes to<\/span> a sense that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">scenario<\/span>, both the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">outcome<\/span> and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">aftermath<\/span> might have been different,\" Mr Obama said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\"When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">that<sup>3<\/sup><\/span> is Trayvon Martin could have been me, 35 years ago.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He shared his experiences of being racially profiled in the past, such as being followed while out shopping.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\"There are very few African-American men who haven't had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\"There are very few African-Americans who haven't had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she has a chance to get off,\" he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mr Obama also <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hailed<\/span> the \"incredible <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">grace<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dignity<\/span>\" of Trayvon Martin's parents - Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton - in the way they reacted to the verdict.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Calling for \"<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">soul-searching<\/span>\" from Americans on issues of race, he also sounded a hopeful note, saying that race relations were improving with each generation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u4e2d\u7565<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Trayvon Martin was shot dead by Mr Zimmerman, a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">neighbourhood watchman<\/span>, after an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">altercation<\/span> in a gated community in Sanford, Florida.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Florida police did not arrest Mr Zimmerman for six weeks after the shooting, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">provoking<\/span> mass <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">rallies<\/span> throughout the
