Abe's Marine Day message: Japan must defend its maritime interests<\/strong><\/em>

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stressed the need for Japan to defend1<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0its maritime<\/span> interests<\/span> on July 12, following Chinese activity around the disputed<\/span> Senkaku Islands and a gas field in the East China Sea.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe security environment has become increasingly severe, including2<\/sup><\/span> through provocations<\/span> surrounding our territorial waters<\/span>,\u201d Abe said in a statement released ahead of Marine Day on July 15, a national holiday.<\/em><\/p>\n

Although the statement did not mention China by name<\/span>, it was clear that Abe was pointing to the Chinese government vessels<\/span> that have repeatedly encroached<\/span> upon Japanese waters around the Senkaku Islands.<\/em><\/p>\n

Beijing has also made moves to develop a gas field near the Japan-China median line in the East China Sea. Abe has called this a violation of a 2008 Japan-China agreement.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cJapan is determined to ... defend our maritime interests ... while also upholding<\/span>2<\/sup><\/span> the order of free and open seas on the basis of the rule of law, opposing2<\/sup><\/span> changes to the status quo<\/span> predicated by force,\" Abe said in the statement.<\/em><\/p>\n

Successive prime ministers have issued statements ahead of Marine Day, which falls on<\/span> the third Monday of July. Abe\u2019s message strongly reflects his conservative views on security issues.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yoshihiko Noda, Abe\u2019s predecessor, stopped short of using such strong expressions as \u201cprovocations\u201d and \u201cchanges to the status quo predicated by force\u201d when he issued his Marine Day statement last year.<\/em><\/p>\n
