Maybe not so much. As we point out regularly here, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">correlation<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">causation<\/span> are very different things. Newly published research concludes those differences reflect the types of kids who decide to participate in music, rather than anything that occurs in the practice room.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Music students tend to be those \u201cwho are already more likely to <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">outperform <sup>4<\/sup><\/span> others on educational <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">measures <sup>5<\/sup><\/span>,\u201d Kenneth Elpus of the University of Maryland reports in the Journal of Research in Music Education.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Once you remove factors such as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">socioeconomic<\/span> status and prior academic achievement from the equation, he writes, \u201cmusic students in the U.S. high school class of 2004 did not outperform non-music students on college entrance exams, or on standardized math tests.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Elpus\u2019 analysis is based on data from a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">longitudinal<\/span> study of 13,530 American students who were high school <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sophomores<\/span> in 2002. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Transcript data<\/span> from that group (the class of 2004) showed that 36 percent earned at least one course credit in music.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #ccffff;\">After controlling for various <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">demographic<\/span> factors<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">, <sup>6<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ccffff;\">\u00a0academic success in previous <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">grades<\/span><\/span><span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">, <sup>6 <\/sup><\/span><span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">and <sup>6<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ccffff;\"> expressed attitudes toward school and learning (including whether they expected to earn a college degree),<\/span> he found no significant difference between music students and others on either college entrance exams or standardized math tests.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Elpus <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">concedes<\/span> that his decision to consider students who have completed one music course as \u201cmusic students\u201d may not \u201cseparate \u2018real\u2019 music students from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dilettantes<\/span>, or those participating in a required music course.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>However, he also <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">crunched<\/span> the numbers for kids who took music courses throughout their four years in high school. He found that \u201ceven those students with sustained music enrollment did not <span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">outscore <sup>4<\/sup><\/span> their non-music peers on standardized tests, once fixed effects, demographics, and prior academic achievement are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">taken into account<\/span>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>None of this contradicts the evidence that music lessons have a positive impact on the brains of young children. (For examples, see here, here, and here.) But it does suggest that arts-education <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">advocates<\/span>, placed in the awkward position of having to justify such courses on \u201cpractical\u201d <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">grounds<\/span>, may be overstating their case <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">when it comes to<\/span> high schoolers.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"background-color: #ccffff;\"> \u201cIt may be time to question seriously, or even retire,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"background-color: #00ffff;\">Elpus concludes,<sup>3<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ccffff;\"> \u201cthe <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">advocacy<\/span> argument that implies music students are more academically successful on standardized tests than their non-music peers because of their enrollment in music.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cA more <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">candid<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">appraisal<\/span> of the current body of research literature might suggest that music is somehow attractive [to those] who are already more likely to perform well academically, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">as such<\/span>, may serve as an important artistic outlet with positive developmental benefits for those students who choose to study it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u305d\u308c\u3067\u306f\u6ce8\u610f\u70b9\u3092\u898b\u3066\u3044\u304d\u307e\u3057\u3087\u3046\u3002<span
