The law covers national security issues, and it includes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">espionage<\/span> and terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Just before the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">passage<\/span> of the law, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">secretary general<\/span> of the governing Liberal Democratic Party, Shigeru Ishiba, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">likened<\/span> those legally demonstrating against the state secrecy law to terrorists in his blog on Nov. 29. <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">This <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">callous<\/span> disregard of freedom of speech greatly raised <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">suspicion<\/span> of what the Abe government really has in mind.<\/span> The Japanese public clearly seems to fear that the law will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">infringe<\/span> on press freedom and personal liberties. In a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">public opinion poll<\/span> conducted by the Kyodo News Agency, 82 percent of respondents said that the law should be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">repealed<\/span> or revised.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">Mr. Abe is, however, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">arrogantly<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dismissive<\/span> of the public\u2019s concerns.<\/span> \u201cThe law does not threaten ordinary life,\u201d he said after the law\u2019s passage. Showing an alarming ignorance of democracy, Gen Nakatani, a senior member of the Liberal Democratic Party, stated that \u201cthe affairs of government <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">are distinct from<\/span> the affairs of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The law is an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">integral<\/span> part of Mr. Abe\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">crusade<\/span> to remake Japan into a \u201cbeautiful country,\u201d which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">envisions<\/span> expanded government power over the people and reduced protection for individual rights \u2014 a strong state supported by a patriotic people. His stated goal is to rewrite the nation\u2019s Constitution, which was imposed by the United States Army during occupation seven decades ago.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">The Liberal Democratic Party\u2019s draft constitution, made public in April last year, deletes the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">existing article<\/span> on the guarantee of fundamental human rights.<\/span> It adds that the people must respect the national flag and national anthem. It states, \u201cThe people shall be aware that duties and obligations accompany freedoms and rights and shall never violate the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">public order<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">public interest<\/span>.\u201d It also says that the prime minister will have the power to declare a state of emergency and suspend ordinary law.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Abe\u2019s aim is to \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cast off<\/span> the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">postwar regime<\/span>.\u201d <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">Critics in Japan warn that he is seeking to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">resurrect<\/span> the pre-1945 state.
