Outspoken<\/span> Finance Minister Taro Aso has caused another international stir<\/span> by urging Japanese politicians bent on<\/span> revising the Constitution to learn from the way Germany under the Nazis amended the Weimar charter<\/span>.1<\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Aso\u2019s remark drew criticism from South Korea.<\/em><\/p>\n

But Aso\u2019s remark, reportedly<\/span> made Monday in a speech in Tokyo, sounded ambiguous<\/span> and may simply have been just more sarcasm<\/span> over Japanese rushing to amend the Constitution.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Liberal Democratic Party, to which2<\/sup> Aso belongs<\/span><\/span>, is seeking to revise the Constitution, including war-renouncing Article 9<\/span>, so Japan can use the right of collective self-defense<\/span> as stipulated<\/span> by the U.N. Charter<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n

This would expand the scope of military cooperation with the U.S. The LDP also wants the Self-Defense Forces to be renamed the National Defense Forces and so<\/span> noted in the Constitution.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe purpose of constitutional revision should be the stabilization<\/span> and peace of the state. Constitutional revision is a just means3<\/sup><\/span>\u201d for that goal, Aso said, according to Kyodo News and other media reports.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want (people) to make a decision in an uproar<\/span>. . . . The Constitution should be revised based on public opinions that carefully examined the situation,\u201d Aso reportedly said. \u201cI don\u2019t want (people) to discuss revising the Constitution in a frenzy<\/span>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Then Aso mentioned how the Nazis effectively<\/span> abolished the 1919 German Constitution.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201c(The Nazis) did it in a \u2018let\u2019s-keep-it-quiet\u2019 manner3<\/sup><\/span>, and the Weimar Constitution was changed almost before people realized it. Why don\u2019t we learn from that method3<\/sup><\/span>?\u201d Aso said.<\/em><\/p>\n

His remarks are contradictory<\/span> because while on the one hand he urged people to make a level-headed<\/span> decision, he also recommended the revisionists learn from the Nazis\u2019 way of changing the German charter on the sly<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n

The latter<\/span> may have been a sarcastic comment against politicians bent on revision, since Aso often uses sarcastic, intricate<\/span> rhetoric<\/span> when he criticizes somebody.<\/em><\/p>\n

But South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Tai-young blasted<\/span> Aso on Tuesday.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSuch remarks definitely hurt many people,\u201d the Yonhap news agency<\/span> quoted Cho as saying. \u201cIt is clear what such comments on the (Nazi) regime<\/span> mean to people of the time and to those who suffered from Japan\u2019s imperialistic<\/span> invasion<\/span>.\u201d
